Twenty-one conversations

The Dialogs

Father and son, question and answer — one conversation for every steering element.

Twenty-one conversations between a father and his grown son. Each one takes a single steering element and turns it into something you can actually hold onto.

Having — the power of creation

1. Family first

Son: “I know the office is busy, Dad, but I have cleared tomorrow for my daughter's birthday.”
Father: “Shouldn't you take the work while it is there?”
Son: “Everything I have was built on ground you prepared. If I neglect my own family, my own spring runs dry. Family is not only where I came from — it is what holds up everything I build now.”

2. Enjoy living

Father: “You work so hard. Do you ever stop?”
Son: “I am learning not just to pick the fruit but to taste it. Like the mango we used to share — swallow it too fast and you miss the whole flavour. I am enjoying the path now, not only the destination.”

3. Respect everything equally

Father: “You talk to everyone the same way — the chief executive and the person cleaning the floor.”
Son: “We are made of the same stardust. You taught me that everyone counts. In the Cosmos there is no ranking; everything that exists has earned the same bow.”

4. Have sympathy

Father: “Your neighbour is so blunt. I would simply ignore him.”
Son: “I try to imagine the bag he is carrying. Perhaps he is not angry at me at all but fighting something I cannot see. Sympathy is the only thing that takes walls down.”

5. Protect and take care

Son: “I spent today sharpening and oiling the old tools you gave me.”
Father: “Those old things? Surely they are due for replacement.”
Son: “By maintaining them I honour what I was given. Protecting what has value is how the foundation stays solid.”

6. Delight your mind with wisdom

Father: “Studying again? Don't you know enough for the job by now?”
Son: “Knowledge is for the job. Wisdom is for the soul. I don't only want to know how the world works — I want to know why. Wisdom was the compass you handed me; I am just sharpening the needle.”

7. Have faith in your Cosmos DNA

Son: “I have stayed calm through all of this pressure.”
Father: “How do you manage that?”
Son: “I trust what is already inside me. The DNA I inherited from you and everyone before you was built to survive and grow. I am exactly what the Cosmos intended.”

Being — the power of awareness

8. Be healthy in mind and body

Father: “You are looking fit.”
Son: “My body is the temple my spirit lives in. Neglect my health and I cannot walk the path at all. I look after the vehicle so the traveller arrives safely.”

9. Be proud

Father: “You walk with your head high — be careful of vanity.”
Son: “This isn't vanity. It is the calm of someone who acted with integrity. I am proud of the steps because they are on the right path.”

10. Be honest, straight and clear

Son: “I walked away from a deal today. It did not feel honest.”
Father: “Wasn't it a great deal of money?”
Son: “Perhaps. But a cloudy mind sleeps badly. Staying straight keeps my inner space clean, and that is worth more than gold.”

11. Be strong

Father: “Everyone shouts these days just to be heard.”
Son: “Not me. Real strength is staying still while the storm rages. The rock does not shout at the sea. It simply remains the rock.”

12. Be clean and pure

Son: “I finally settled that old argument with my friend.”
Father: “Wasn't he the one in the wrong?”
Son: “It stopped mattering. Grudges are dust in the heart. Forgiving made my Being clear again — I did not want to carry the weight any further.”

13. Be positive and constructive

Father: “The world isn't getting any easier.”
Son: “True. But I would rather look at what can still be built from the pieces that are left. When something breaks, it makes room for something new.”

14. Be focused

Father: “You were so deep in thought I didn't hear you come in.”
Son: “When I do something, I do it with my whole soul. Focus is a laser — don't scatter the energy and it cuts through the hardest resistance.”

Doing — the power of interaction

15. Do sport

Father: “Why are you still running all those miles at your age?”
Son: “To remind my brain that my will governs my body. A Dragon has to stay trained, or its wings get heavy.”

16. Do work

Father: “You are putting an enormous amount of detail into that project.”
Son: “Every piece of work is a fingerprint of who I am. I want my Doing to leave the world a little more delicious than I found it.”

17. Help others

Father: “Why help the neighbour with his garden and ask for nothing?”
Son: “Because the sweetest mango is the one you share. Helping is how I return energy to a Cosmos that has given me plenty.”

18. Talk soft and breathe slow

Father: “You argue very differently these days.”
Son: “I noticed people listen harder when I speak softly. And breathing slowly keeps me the master of my own power. Noise is for the weak; silence is for the strong.”

19. Take responsibility

Son: “Something went wrong at work and I told them straight away it was mine.”
Father: “Weren't you worried about the consequences?”
Son: “No — taking responsibility makes me larger, not smaller. It is the only way a mistake turns into wisdom.”

20. Resolve stress and decide on relevance

Father: “You never seem stressed any more. How?”
Son: “I ask whether it will still matter in a year. If not, I drop that stone from the bag. I don't spend energy on noise.”

21. Live with nature

Son: “Let's walk in the woods, Dad. No phones.”
Father: “Isn't that a waste of time?”
Son: “The opposite. Nature reminds us who we actually are. Between the trees and under the sky, my Having, Being and Doing all click back into place.”
