Most records are built by adding. This one was built by removing. Here is what survived.

The kick

Everything starts with the kick drum, and the kick drum started as a problem. In the room we were working in, anything tuned near 50Hz turned into a low hum that swallowed the vocal. So we retuned it upward until the room stopped fighting back, then shortened the tail so it punches and gets out of the way.

That single decision set the tempo of the whole song. A shorter kick leaves space, and space is what the chorus needed.

The two synths

There are only two synth voices on the entire record.

• The pad — wide, warm, slightly detuned. This is the golden hour. It never changes chord underneath the chorus, which is why the chorus feels like it is standing still while everything moves around it.
• The lead — thin, bright, almost brittle. It only appears four times in the song. Every appearance is a hook you did not notice you were waiting for.

The broken delay

The tape delay we used has a fault: at high feedback it drifts slightly sharp. Most engineers would fix it. We printed it. That drift is the shimmer you hear on the last word of every chorus line, and it is the reason the track sounds warm rather than clinical.

Where the drop hides

Listen to bar 24. There is no crash, no riser, no build. The drop is a subtraction — the pad drops out for exactly one beat, and your ear fills the gap. By the time the pad returns, the chorus is already running.

It is the oldest trick there is, and it works because silence is louder than anything you can add.

What we left out

There is no counter-melody in the second verse. There were three. We removed all of them. There is no vocal double on the chorus. There was one. It made the song smaller.

Twenty-one elements to live by, seven shadows to refuse. Producing is the same discipline: know what to add, know what to say no to.
